Mother’s Day is an official day to honour and celebrate all the ‘Mothers’ around the world. A day to acknowledge everything they do. Countless hours spent cooking, cleaning, driving, attending all those school functions and weekends on the sporting field watching sport.
Who doesn’t want to shower their mum with a little extra love on this special day by buying the perfect Mother’s Day gift?
When do we celebrate Mother’s Day in Australia?
In many countries, the day chosen to celebrate Mother’s Day is based on seasons.
Mothering Sunday (as it is sometimes called) falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent in the UK. Because Mother’s Day in the UK is associated with Easter which changes according to the lunar cycle, the actual date moves every year. This year, in 2021, the UK celebrated Mother’s Day on Sunday, March 14.
In Australia, Mother’s Day is celebrated in Autumn on the second Sunday in May and this year that date is Sunday May 9th. It’s only a few weeks away so now is the perfect time to plan your Mother’s Day presents!
If you’ve moved to Australia from another country, it can be so easy to forget Mother’s Day (both in your new home, and in your old home!) so it’s important to put it in your diary. You don’t want to be rushing around at the last minute trying to buy gifts for your mum online and potentially have her thinking you’ve forgotten her!

Mother’s day present ideas
In case you’re someone like me who sometimes struggles with Mother’s Day gift ideas, I’ve compiled a list of some of the best Mother’s Day gifts to show your mum how much you appreciate her.
And because no two mums are the same, I’ve included a couple of unique mother’s day gifts I’m confident will bring a smile to the special person in your life.
Give the Mother’s Day gift of flowers
Let’s begin with the most obvious (but still very special) Mother’s Day gift idea…Flowers! Mums will usually spend money on others before spending on themselves. Flowers are one of those standard gifts for Mother’s Day, so you might think they don’t make the best Mother’s Day gifts but a lovely bunch of flowers really is a treat for mums as they aren’t something they often buy for themselves. Whether you add a gift to a bunch of flowers, or choose flowers on their own, mothers will always treasure a bunch of fresh flowers bought especially for them.
And if your mother lives further away, imagine her delight at receiving a beautiful bunch of delivered fresh flowers with a card. Every time she walks past that bunch of flowers she will be reminded of you. Take a look at the range of beautiful Mother’s Day flowers at Petals.com.au and make this Mother’s Day her most memorable yet!
If you’re stumped on what flowers she’ll like you cannot go past lilies, tulips or simply opt for the classic rose. If the mum in your life has moved to Australia from another country, it’s also a lovely touch to buy a hand-tied bunch of native Australian flowers.
Mother’s Day gift box of gourmet treats
Indulge your mother in the very best gourmet products by selecting a gourmet gift box or gourmet gift hamper as a Mother’s Day gift. It shows you’ve given careful thought on what gourmet treats she will love.
Gourmet hampers and Mother’s Day gift boxes filled with goodies make great Mother’s Day gifts and it’s something that can be unpacked slowly and enjoyed for many weeks. This is definitely the Mother’s Day gift that keeps on giving!
Dessert hampers or chocolate bouquet Mother’s Day gifts
In case you’ve gone down the fresh flowers path one too many times with your mum, it’s time to up your game with a gift of Edible Booms. Two sisters are behind this booming online business that is 100% Australian owned delivering edible bouquets and gourmet dessert hampers across Australia, New Zealand and the UK. These gorgeous Mother’s Day gifts will have your mother embracing your ingenuity and all her friends will be jealous! They’re such an easy gift too as you just order your Mother’s Day gift online and have them sent directly to her.
Great Mother’s Day gifts for adventurous mums
There’s plenty of mothers out there who love exploring wide-open spaces in the great outdoors. What about thinking about the adventures your mum enjoys and organising an experience to get her adrenaline pumping and heart rate up. There are plenty of day trips you could book her on to, or better still book a tour or attraction for your whole family to enjoy together! Experience Oz offers loads of Mother’s Day activity ideas, often with special offer rates too.
The current world situation means domestic touring only, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a lot of fun! There are plenty of Mother’s Day activity ideas to choose from. How about a whale watching trip, a bridge climb or tickets to a theme park? The only limit is your imagination.
Pampering gifts for Mother’s Day
I love making my own self-care gift boxes for time-poor mum who can’t spare a few hours for a day spa. You can spoil her with some organic skincare products from Nourished Life. With an extensive range of natural skincare and makeup products, mums can indulge in a little home pampering compliments of some thoughtful purchases.
What better gifts for Mother’s Day than some organic, Australia-made products that can make her look and feel wonderful?
Holiday gifts for Mother’s Day
Why not take a road trip in Australia with your mum for an unforgettable Mother’s Day? Hit the road and get exploring the open road in a campervan or motorhome! Hiring a camper or motorhome is the perfect solution for a mum that enjoys adventure and wildlife but prefers not to camp (I speak from experience as I personally LOVE travelling in a motorhome but tent-life definitely isn’t for me!)
It could be something your mother has never experienced before and is willing to try. Or maybe she’s an avid traveller. Either way it’s a Mother’s Day experience you can book online to enjoy together as a family.
(You know your mum the best, if a motorhome trip isn’t luxury enough, go straight to Booking.com and find a 4* plus hotel for her instead! Shop for hotels here.)
